Barcelona WS 09-11.10.24

19-20 June 2025

From 9 to 11 October 2024, the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) and the Parc Agrari del Baix Llobregat will host the Barcelona Creative Workshop of the ReCITYing project. This workshop will bring together students, creatives, international partners and local stakeholders to explore the intersection of architecture, agronomy, and art in reimagining rural spaces through sustainable design and creative recycling. Participants will focus on transforming agricultural by-products, plants, and other materials from the Parc Agrari into artistic architectural installations that address the physical and social underuse of this vital agricultural landscape near Barcelona. The aim is to conceptualize zero-waste installations inspired by the circular economy, transforming discarded materials into meaningful design solutions that celebrate the potential of agricultural spaces. The workshop will unfold over three days, with immersive work sessions, collective reviews, and a series of lectures and discussions on topics ranging from ecological connectivity to innovative materials, stimulating new ideas and offering creative insights into land art. A full day of hands-on activities will take place in the Parc Agrari, where participants will engage directly with the land by co-planting materials that will be used in the future installation., as well as joining a slow-food barbecue, promoting local, sustainable agricultural products and community interaction. The final day will be dedicated to refining the group proposals before presenting them to an international jury. By merging theory, practice, and community engagement, the Barcelona Workshop will foster new ways to regenerate underused rural spaces and create a lasting impact on the relationship between urban populations and the agricultural landscape.

Together with the IAAC team and local stakeholders from the Parc Agrari Consortium, the workshop will be conducted by guest artist Alejandro Haiek Coll, from Umeå University.
